(PCM) Academy Award winning actor Tommy Lee Jones wrote, directed, and stars in Roadside Attractions The Homesman, opening in select theaters November 14, 2014.
When three women living on the edge of the American frontier are driven mad by harsh pioneer life, the task of saving them falls to the pious, independent-minded Mary Bee Cuddy (Hilary Swank).
Transporting the women by covered wagon to Iowa, she soon realizes just how daunting the journey will be, and employs a low-life drifter, George Briggs (Tommy Lee Jones), to join her.
The unlikely pair and the three women (Grace Gummer, Miranda Otto, Sonja Richter) head east, where a waiting minister and his wife (Meryl Streep) have offered to take the women in.
But the group first must traverse the harsh Nebraska Territories marked by stark beauty, psychological peril and constant threat.
Written and directed by Tommy Lee Jones (No Country For Old Men, The Fugitive) alongside co-writers Kieran Fitzgerald (The Ballad of Esequiel Hernández), and Wesley A. Oliver and based on the novel by Glendon Swarthout, The Homesman stars Tommy Lee Jones, Hilary Swank, Grace Gummer, Miranda Otto, Sonja Richter, Hailee Steinfeld, James Spader, and Meryl Streep.
With a fresh rating of 73% on Rotten Tomatoes, critics are applauding Tommy Lee Jones’ direction. Jon Frosch of The Atlantic wrote “Jones continues to craft evocative, painterly images, and he takes real risks with tone, shifting from tragic to comic without the usual cues or transitions.”
Other critics have expressed their disappointment in Jones not exploring the feminist side of westerns; Keith Uhlich of Time Out New York writes: “It doesn’t help that Swank never finds a way into this highly unappealing character, or that Jones (mostly phoning in the pitiable surliness) avoids delving very deeply into the story’s proto-feminist undercurrents.”
Despite the negative reviews, The Homesman‘s Rotten Tomatoes’ score is fresh, with 11 positive reviews and 4 rotten.
