(PCM) Main Street Films brings the German drama, West, from director Christian Schwochow and writer Heide Schwochow, to the U.S. where it will premiere in New York City at the Anthology Film Archives on Friday, November 7.
Winner of the Gold Film Award from the German Film Awards for Best Leading Actress and nominated for Best Screenplay, West has been received in the U.S. with mixed reviews. Critics are praising Jördis Triebel’s performance but criticize the film’s loose strings.
John DeFore wrote for The Hollywood Reporter: “Smartly acted and scripted with insight into its protagonist’s emotional baggage, the film is less than action-packed and may frustrate viewers who expect resolution in plotlines that turn out not to be the point.”
Ron Schieb of Variety can’t see past the film’s flaws though, saying, “Despite Jordis Triebel’s strong performance, this latest drama about a divided Germany ultimately gets mired in details.”
West stars Jördis Triebel, Tristan Göbel, Alexander Scheer, and Jacky Ido.
