After last weekends box office opening of $122 million, Thor: Ragnarok had a strong second weekend earning an estimated $56 million. Ragnarok’s domestic total now sits at $211 million, its foreign total at $438 million, bringing its total box office intake $650 million after just two weeks after its release. Not too bad. Not too bad at all.
Ragnarok’s main competition this weekend were the releases of Daddy’s Home 2 and Murder on the Orient Express. It was widely expected Thor: Ragnarok would once again top the box office, but second place was the spot up for grabs.
In a tight race for second, The Will Ferrell/Mark Wahlberg comedy Daddy’s Home 2 was able to top Murder on the Orient Express earning an estimated $30 million. 2015’s Daddy’s Home was a box office smash, opening with $38 million and finishing with a worldwide total $242 million.
Murder on the Orient Express finished closely behind with an estimated $28 million. The film is directed by the original Thor director Kenneth Branagh, and has an insane cast list. The cast includes Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Judi Dench, Daisy Ridley, Willem Dafoe, Josh Gad, and Penelope Cruz. Murder has a reported budget of $55 million, so it still has some work to do to recoup its investments.
Rounding out the weekend top five we have A Bad Moms Christmas bringing in another $11 million, for a domestic total of $39 million. Jigsaw added just $3 million to its domestic total of $34 million. Uninspiring numbers foe uninspiring movies. Nevertheless, an overall solid weekend at the box office.
