Despite the fact that the upcoming fourth film in “The Matrix” series has not yet begun filming and the casting is still taking place, the news has just been revealed that there will now be a fifth film in the works.
The news was revealed by screenwriter Zak Penn, who is best known for his work on “Avengers” and “Ready Player One”. Penn tweeted the following:
people keep asking, so let me clarify there are two different #Matrix projects at wb. i wrote one set earlier in the timeline of the matrix universe. Lana Wachowski is directing a sequel that i did not work on, but cant wait to see. Neither of them are reboots. #notareboot

According to the latest news, if the original cast Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, who’d return to their roles as Neo and Trinity agree to return, the plot could take us on a journey through time, as Warner has been looking for actors to play younger versions of the two characters.
Lana Wachowski will be writing and directing the follow-up movie, but for now, no explanation has been given as to why Lilly isn’t involved in the project.
No word yet on which actors are confirmed to be involved with either film, however it is certainly good news for fans that not only one, but two films are currently in the works.
