Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice’s Zach Snyder, Amy Adams, and Ben Affleck Celebrate Save the Bats Week

BATMANvSUPERMAN(PCM) Warner Bros. has teamed up with the Organization for Bat Conservation to celebrate National Save the Bats week! Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, and Zach Snyder all appear in the video, explaining why it’s crucial that we take action to save the bats of North America.

Eating millions of bugs every night, bats are a crucial component to maintaining a healthy ecosystem. Aside from keeping the bug and insect population at a sustainable level, when bats consume copious amounts of critters, farmers use less pesticides on their crops, resulting in less pollution running into the ground and groundwater.

Recently, bats in Michigan, Arkansas, Wisconsin, 25 other states, and 5 Canadian provinces have been heavily affected by White Nose Syndrome, a very deadly emerging disease first recorded in a cave in New York in February, 2006 that is suspected for the deaths of 5.7 million to 6.7 million North American bats.

The First Iranian Vampire Western: ‘A Girl Walks Alone at Night’

AGirlWalksAloneAtNight(PCM) Ana Lily Amirpour’s suspenseful romance-horror, A Girl Walks Alone at Night, has critics praising the debut director’s aesthetic and story, offering up a fresh take on a classic horror genre.

Shot in black and white, everything from the characters, the look, a modern soundtrack of persian rock and euro-pop make this a truly modern Iranian film. A mythical mash-up of genre and culture, it’s different than any Iranian film you’ve ever seen … the first Iranian Vampire Western.

A Girl Walks Alone at Night is a love story between two tortured souls in an Iranian Ghost town called Bad City… a place that reeks of death and loneliness where a lonesome vampire is preying on the towns most depraved denizens.

‘Magician: The Astonishing Life and Work of Orson Welles’ Opens in NY and LA Dec. 12

Magician(PCM) Academy Award-winning writer-director-editor Chuck Workman brings iconic Citizen Kane director Orson Welles to life through audio recordings, rare archive footage, and interviews in his documentary, Magician: The Astonishing Life and Work of Orson Welles.

Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter gave Magician a great review after its premiere the 2014 Telluride Film Festival, praising Workman’s deep pulls of international archival footage and other rare primary sources to give his audience a somewhat new and full portrait of Orson Welles.

“An in-depth study of Orson Welles’ singular life and career would run the length of a miniseries, but Chuck Workman engagingly hits a good many highlights in stone-skipping fashion in Magician: The Astonishing Life and Work of Orson Welles,” writes McCarthy.

Additionally, by delving into the protean talent’s bag of unfinished projects, the veteran documentary and clips-reel whiz tries to counter the view that Welles had a fear of … Read more

Katie Holmes is a Righteous Killer in ‘Miss Meadows’

MissMeadows(PCM) Karen Leigh Hopkins’ Miss Meadows, a dark comedy-thriller starring Katie Holmes in the titular role, follows a saccharine substitute teacher who gets her kicks from killing criminals on the side.

The directorial debut of screenwriter-actress Karen Leigh Hopkins (Stepmom, Because I Said So) received mixed reviews after its premiere at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. The film’s main flaws seem to be it’s jarring shifts in tone and unjustifiably outlandish plot.

Frank Scheck, in his review of Miss Meadows for The Hollywood Reporter, called the film “off-puttingly bizarre,” saying, “unlike its deadly, gun-toting heroine, this darkly satirical comedy misfires.”

Scheck further explains poor rating of the dark comedy saying, “Holmes, using her doe-eyed adorableness to provocative effect, delivers a fine, startlingly off-kilter performance, and Dale is highly appealing as the gentle, accordion-playing sheriff. But director-screenwriter Hopkins is unsuccessful in navigating the absurd storyline’s jarring tonal shifts.”

Winner of the Gold Film Award from the German Film Awards for Best Leading Actress and nominated for Best Screenplay, West has been received in the U.S. with mixed reviews. Critics are praising Jördis Triebel’s performance but criticize the film’s loose strings.

John DeFore wrote for The Hollywood Reporter: “Smartly acted and scripted with insight into its protagonist’s emotional baggage, the film is less than action-packed and may frustrate viewers who expect resolution in plotlines that turn out not to be the point.”

Ron Schieb of Variety can’t see past the film’s flaws though, saying, “Despite Jordis Triebel’s strong performance, this latest drama about a divided Germany ultimately gets mired in details.”
