The Tragedy of “Bohemian Rhapsody” Isn’t How Freddie Mercury Died, It’s How (It Thinks) He Lived and the Man Behind the Camera

“Bohemian Rhapsody” …doesn’t understand the kind of person Freddie Mercury was. Instead, it perversely fetishizes the tabloid idea and tries to humanize that idea, only to punish him out of frustration. That’s not what a tribute to Freddie Mercury or Queen should be about…

The Darkness is Ours to Take in Luca Guadagnino’s Hellish, Operatic and Unapologetically Feminist “Suspiria” Update

Hush Hush, Hush, Here Comes the Boogeyman… A Worthy “Halloween” Forty Years Later

“Halloween” s much like your favorite haunted house to visit at the amusement park. It’s gotten a fresh coat of paint and added a little panache to the proceedings and even thrown in some clever reworkings of some of the sequels’ better moments and chilling homages to the first’s most iconic scares, but everyone working on it knows exactly why it was your favorite place to visit and not only have honored that memory, but expanded on it in a way others could only imitate.

‘Wonder Wheel’ or: When Autopilot Woody Allen Goes on Autopilot

wonder wheelSet in one of Mr. Allen’s favorite periods, 1950s Coney Island as only he can visualize, romanticize and dramatize it, the ‘Wonder Wheel’ of the title refers to the legendary Ferris wheel on the boardwalk

George Clooney’s “Suburbicon” Goes for Dark Laughs with Faint Success

Suburbicon is an especially savage Coen Brothers yarn and one that would have been more of a success under a different director, even directed by the men themselves. That comment isn’t meant to slander Mr. Clooney’s abilities as a filmmaker, but there come a handful of scenes where it feels he’s too timid to truly embrace its misanthropic ideology.

A “Babysitter” McG Tries With

Of all the “second tier” Netflix acquisitions this year, “The Babysitter” is arguably the best, thanks to its lean running time of 85 minutes, the chemistry between its two leads and some ghoulishly outlandish death scenes that could earn a deserved place in the pantheon of horror films. Beyond that, it’s not really something that hasn’t been done before and stronger.

An IMAX Experience Worthy of ‘Blade Runner’

Regardless of whether it’s seen in IMAX or viewed in standard DCP, if one considers themselves a Blade Runner aficionado or simply excited to see what Mr. Villeneuve does to expand the Blade Runner mythology, they must make the effort to check this out so experiences like this ultimately “aren’t lost in time, like tears in rain,” to quote Mr. Hauer’s iconic final monologue.

‘Jeepers Creepers’, Where’d You Get That Bad Third Movie?

When a horror film gets to its third entry, it better damn well know where to go or things will go downhill. And when Jeepers Creepers 3 does badly with its fanbase, it won’t be because of Mr. Salva’s past indiscretions. It’ll be because he’s made a really bad film that furthers the argument that Jeepers Creepers should have stuck with one film.
