Beyond the Lights is the story of Noni, the music world’s latest superstar.
But not all is what it seems, and the pressures of fame have Noni on the edge – until she meets Kaz Nicol, a young cop and aspiring politician who’s been assigned to her detail.
Drawn to each other, Noni and Kaz fall fast and hard, despite the protests of those around them who urge them to put their career ambitions ahead of their romance.
But it is ultimately Kaz’s love that gives Noni the courage to find her own voice and break free to become the artist she was meant to be.
Written and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball, The Secret Life of Bees), Beyond the Lights stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Belle, Odd Thomas), Nate Parker (Non-Stop, The Great Debators), Aml Ameen (The Maze Runner, Lee Daniel’s The Butler) Minnie Driver (Good Will Hunting, Princess Mononoke), Richard Colson Baker aka rapper MGK, and Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon, Saw).
Beyond the Lights currently has a very fresh rating of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes from a total of 5 critics’ reviews.
David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter wrote “Gina Prince-Bythewood’s entertaining music-biz melodrama is no less satisfying for the familiarity of its soapy trajectory” and Andrew Barker of Variety wrote “Gugu Mbatha-Raw gives a fierce lead turn in Gina Prince-Bythewood’s messy but undeniably entertaining music-biz romance.”
Beyond the Lights opens in theaters nationwide November 14, 2014.
Beyond the Lights is rated PG-13 for sexual content including suggestive gestures, partial nudity, language and thematic elements and has a run-time of 1 hour and 42 minutes.
