(PCM) Russia Today, or as it is currently referred to RT, news anchor Liz Wahl resigned from her anchor position with the Kremlin funded news network while broadcasting live on the air.
Wahl was a Washington-based correspondent for the network and claimed she was resigning because of the networks coverage of President Vladimir Putin’s actions in the Ukrainian region. She felt that the network was “whitewashing” Moscow’s military intervention in Crimea.
Wahl completely veered off the script/teleprompter and stated ”I cannot be part of a network funded by the Russian government that whitewashes the actions of Putin. I’m proud to be an American and believe in disseminating the truth, and that is why, after this newscast, I’m resigning.”
The RT network is an English language network that is aimed at a global audience, however their news and other programming has a decidedly pro-Russian slant.
RT has released a statement following Wahl’s resignation and claimed that her actions were “self-promotional”. The statement went on to say that ”When a journalist disagrees with the editorial position of his or her organization, the usual course of action is to address those grievances with the editor, and, if they cannot be resolved, to quit like a professional. But when someone makes a big public show of a personal decision, it is nothing more than a self-promotional stunt”.
For her part, Wahl said that she “feels sick” that she had worked there and that she had been planning to make a move away from the job for quite some time.
