(PCM) Attention RoboCop fans! In Detroit there is now a RoboCop statue and today, June 3rd, has officially been declared “RoboCop Day”.
We are sure that it was no coincindence that the 10 ft tall bronze statue made it’s debut on the same day Jose Padilha’s remake of the cult classic film is released on DVD and Blu-Ray. The original “RoboCop” film directed by Paul Verhoeven was released back in 1987.
According to several sources a RoboCop monument was in the planning stages since 2011 after a post on Twitter planted the seed for the idea. The post read “Philadelphia has a statue of Rocky & Robocop would kick Rocky’s butt. He’s a GREAT ambassador for Detroit.”
Not sure how that exactly led them to agree to craft a 10 ft tall bronze statue of RoboCop, but then again, stranger things have been known to occur. The organization behind the statues creation, Imagination Station, raised the $50,000 to have the bronze RoboCop replica made.
Previously there was a statue announcement ceremony set to take place today, however please be advised, ROBOCOP’s Prime Directives have changed and today’s scheduled presentation and statue announcement at the Detroit Police Department has been cancelled. We know that fans have been eagerly awaiting news on the effigy honoring one of Detroit’s finest and we look forward to sharing those details in the near future.
June 3rd remains #ROBOCOPDay in Detroit, with ROBOCOP making visits throughout the city in celebration of the Blu-ray and DVD release of the film. Additionally ROBOCOP will head over to Comerica Park, participating in a meet and greet with fans and throwing out the first pitch at 7:00pm before the Detroit Tigers game against the Toronto Blue Jays. The first 10,000 fans in attendance will receive a commemorative ROBOCOP poster as they enter the stadium with additional surprises throughout the evening.
