(PCM) Some call it a tease, but Marvel released a not so cryptic image that makes it clear.
Civil War is back. It will be back.
Marvel’s writers are tweeting about it, and Marvel released the following image from 2006’s Civil War with Captain America and Ironman pulling Spider-Man from both sides.
Civil War was a 2006 story that divided the Marvel Universe on a political hot potato, Superhero Registration.
The premise was simple for Marvel editors. Let’s have superheroes fight each other – it sells. They didn’t really have a political agenda but the story resonated with the politics of the early 2000’s. Some thought it was an analogous commentary on the United States Patriot Act.
The Civil War story had a very anti-climatic ending that culminated with a thud. In short the story was panned by critics and readers alike. It’s premise however has stood the test of time.
One of the pivotal sub plots of Civil War was the unmasking of Spider-Man and his personal fight over which side of the issue in the story he sided on.
Civil War had a major impact on the Marvel Universe. Some were silly such as the retcon of Peter Parker.
At the time Civil War began Peter was married to Mary Jane. Before Civil War ended, Marvel promised they wouldn’t do any outlandish retcon of Peter Parker.
Then Marvel did just what they said they would not. Using an mystical character, Marvel wrote Mary Jane and Peter’s marriage out of existence and made the entire world forget Spider-Man was ever unmasked. It was a very very hard storyline to swallow.
But it is comics. Marvel didn’t want Peter married as it stifled the story line. Who knows maybe now they will bring Doc Oc back from the dead as a result of this next Civil War?
What’s most interesting about Civil War making a return is that Marvel may one day make a film of this story. It would require negotiating with Sony of course to allow Spider-Man to make guest visit to his home universe of Marvel.
Do you think Civil War would make the best story premise in bringing Spider-Man back into the Marvel fold?
