The House with a Clock Built in its Wall
Directed By Eli Roth
Starring Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Owen Vaccaro and Kyle McLaughlin
It is awesome when Autumn comes around and the film industry offers us more than scary slasher flicks or remakes of horror movies that have been done more than is necessary.
The House with a Clock in its Wall is something truly unique. It is part Harry Potter and Part Hocus Pocus. It gives us small scares and great adventure with laughs in between.
The story revolves around Louis, a preteen boy, and takes place in 1955 in a small town in Michigan. Louis has been orphaned and is taken in by his Uncle Jonathan. In a surprisingly short period of time Louis learns that his Uncle is a warlock and the house that he is now living in is alive with magic. Louis also meets his uncle’s next-door neighbor, Mrs. Zimmerman, who is a witch.
Louis quickly decides that he would like to be a warlock and convinces his uncle to train him. Between Mrs. Zimmerman and his Uncle Louis quickly learns his spells but also must learn that magic comes from and is part of him and it is more than just saying the words from dusty books. He must add himself.
The story takes a turn when Louis, desperate to make friends at his new school, raises an evil warlock from the grave to impress one of the popular kids. This warlock, Isaac Izzard, has been dead for a year and upon being resurrected setsout to turn back time by using the magic clock which isn’t in the wall at all. Izzard’s dream is to wipe out humanity and start again with just him and his wife who had been disguised as the neighbor across the street.
The story is fun and fantastic with a great verbal rivalry between Uncle Jonathan and Mrs. Zimmerman. The special effects are not overwhelming and fit in perfectly with the story. This is not heavy drama, nor slap stick comedy it is a pleasant film and one that truly the whole family can enjoy.
