Jason Reitman To Direct Ghostbusters Sequel; Teaser Trailer Revealed

Well, well, this is interesting. Last night, Sony Pictures revealed that a new Ghostbusters sequel is on the way, and it could potentially start shooting this summer. Apparently, the sequel has secretly been in development over at the studio for awhile now — with Jason Reitman crafting the story and directing. You heard that right, the son of the man who directed the first two Ghostbusters films is set to step into the director’s chair for the sequel.

Although the 2016 reboot of the same name was intended to be a fresh starting point for the franchise, that film was ultimately a financial and critical disappointment. As a result, the new film will be a continuation of the story from the first two. Additionally, the report also mentions that the new film will follow a quartet of teenagers who become new Ghostbusters in the modern day. Here’s the teaser trailer, along with the quotes from both son and father on the sequel below, which all come from EW (via Comicbook.com):

The trailer itself doesn’t reveal too much, but the tone very much feels reminiscent of something like Stranger Things, which was ironically  by the original film. We still don’t know if any of remaining original cast members will make a return, but from the way that Jason Reitman frames things, that seems like a good possibility.

I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans. This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.

Ivan Reitman also chimed in about the new sequel, confirming that it will very much be a “passing of the torch” moment for the franchise.

It will be a passing of the torch both inside and out. It was a decision he had to come to himself. He worked really hard to be independent and developed a wonderful career on his own. So I was quite surprised when he came to me with Gil and said, ‘I know I’ve been saying for 10 years I’m the last person who should make a Ghostbusters movie, but…I have this idea.’ Literally, I was crying by the end of it, it was so emotional and funny.

As confirmed by the new teaser trailer above, what is looking like Ghostbusters 3 will hit theaters sometime in 2020. Even though a specific date has yet to be claimed, expect to learn more about the film as it seemingly gears up for production in the coming months!
