Bradley Cooper and Sean Penn are movie stars who share a great admiration for each other, and it took a great director to bring them together. That director happens to be Paul Thomas Anderson’s whose latest movie, ‘Licorice Pizza’ is now playing. ‘Licorice Pizza’ is a drama-comedy coming of age story. It revolves around Alana Kane and Gary Valentine growing up and running around and going through the scary thing called first love in the San Fernando Valley in 1973. Anderson also wrote the film. The film is currently playing in select theaters. Bradley Cooper has always looked up to Sean Penn and was even filmed on Inside the Actors Studio back in the day asking him a question. And when Cooper directed A Star Is Born, Penn went on his little press tour promoting how good the movie was and put Cooper over. And now they’re finally in the same film together. Thanks, Paul. This weekend the annual Ohana Music Festival is taking place at Doherty State Park in sunny California. The festival headliners include The Strokes, Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats, Glen Hansard, Eddie Vedder, Incubus, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Pearl Jam is my favorite band. And if you are a fan of music you have probably discovered other music and art through that music. I discovered Neil Young, The Ramones, and The La’s just to name a few while listening to Pearl Jam. I also discovered actor Sean Penn. One of the first albums I ever bought was Pearl Jam’s album Yield. While thumbing through the booklet that came with the CD, I found the picture that went along with the song IN HIDING. There really isn’t any lyrics to the song, but a little written message at the bottom of the page “ Thanks Sean”. Bradley Cooper is a globally recognized actor whether he likes it or not. Last year Cooper also made his directorial debut with the blockbuster hit A Star Is Born. The movie received numerous awards including eight nominations at the 91st Academy Awards. It won best original song for Lady Gaga’s song “ Shallow”. Lady Gaga was Cooper’s costar in the film and was also nominated for Best Actress. A Star Is Born was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars but did not win. I bet Sean Penn was really upset about the loss considering he wrote an essay for Deadline about his love for the film back in February. A Star Is Born is a great film, but why would you award a film that has been remade three times? Cooper did show he has directorial chops, but he needs some originality when it comes to a story.
